A river city in Borneo, not a Malaysian version of Kuala Lumpur. The waterfront, the food, and a slower week are the point. People retire here and stay. The city does not pretend to be a capital.
It suits people who want Borneo, community, and a pace well under KL. It is the wrong city if you need frequent long-haul flights from your door or a large international-school market.

The street of cafes and shophouses just east of the centre. A more daily version of town than the waterfront postcard.
The beach and the mountain north of the city. A place you go, not the neighbourhood you do your shopping in. Worth knowing. Not a substitute for a flat in town.
The river, the market, and the walkable centre. The Kuching most visits start in. Living here means the town is outside the door, and so is the evening crowd.
